Local notes: 2011 shows at Ballroom, chorus singers sought, Johnny Winter, Monheit and UNH jazz
But Winter has also been sidetracked by hard drugs, depression and management problems. Moving past all that proved the toughest challenge of his life, but he’s now been clean for several years, and his guitar licks have benefited. He’ll show off his skills at the Blue Ocean Music Hall on Salisbury Beach on Saturday, Jan. 15.
Winter’s been touring heavily the last few years and has made several stops in northern New England, including a gig at The Stone Church in Newmarket two years ago. The first complete anthology of his work emerged in 2009.
The show begins at 8 p.m. on Jan. 15 at Blue Ocean Music Hall, 4 Oceanfront North, Salisbury, Mass., 978-462-5888, www.blueoceanhall.com. Tickets are $45.
Casino Ballroom announces Deftones: The Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom has announced its first show of 2011. The Deftones will play the venue on Thursday, May 5, along with opening act Dillinger Escape Plan. Tickets go on sale on Friday, Jan. 14.
The Deftones originally formed in 1988 in Sacramento, Calif., and released their debut album, “Adrenaline,” in 1995. They rose to prominence in the hard rock and heavy metal circuits with their second release, “Around the Fur,” in 1997, and followed it up with “White Pony” in 2000.
The band’s latest release was a long time in the making. The Deftones began work on their sixth studio album in 2007 but shelved the effort when original bassist Chi Cheng was injured in a serious car accident. Cheng was replaced by former Quicksand bassist Sergio Vega in 2009, and “Diamond Eyes” came out in 2010.
The 18-plus show begins at 8 p.m. on May 5 at the Casino Ballroom, 169 Ocean Blvd., Hampton, 603-929-4100, www.casinoballroom.com. Tickets are $28. —MK
