Growing number of Republicans join gay marriage cause
A growing number of prominent Republicans have joined the leadership team of Standing Up for New Hampshire Families, a bipartisan group that opposes efforts to repeal the state’s same-sex marriage law.
The organization is co-chaired by Lew Feldstein, former president of the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation, and Craig Stowell, a Republican businessman and former marine. Its main spokesperson is Christine Baratta, who previously served as communications director for the state GOP under former chair Jack Kimball.
Among the recent additions to the group’s Leadership Council is former Executive Councilor Ruth Griffin from Portsmouth, who is also a former Republican National Committeewoman. Other prominent Republicans on the Leadership Council include former state Rep. Anthony DiFruscia, former Hopkinton Republican Town Committee chair Irena Goddard, former state Rep. Liz Hager, Republican State Committee member J.P. Marzullo, former speaker of the House David Nixon, and former House majority leader and deputy speaker Kimon Zachos, among others.
Standing Up for New Hampshire Families has been campaigning against House Bill 437, which would repeal the state’s gay marriage law. The House is expected to vote on the bill in February. Gov. John Lynch has vowed to repeal it if it passes.
