Upcoming on local stages: 'Twelfth Night,' 'Phyzgig,' and 'Is There Fat in That?'

NHTP presents ‘Twelfth Night’: New Hampshire Theatre Project will stage Shakespeare’s beloved comedy “Twelfth Night,” or “What You Will,” beginning on the traditional 12th day of Christmas, Jan. 6. It runs weekends through Jan. 22 at West End Studio Theater in Portsmouth. It’s a show with magic, romance and playfulness, and a sense of mystery beneath it all.

This production is directed by Genevieve Aichele, with original music by CJ Lewis and design work by Zhana Morris and Meghann Beauchamp.

It features Seacoast actors Blair Hundertmark, CJ Lewis, Kathy Somssich, Jamie Bradley, Robin Fowler, Heather Glenn Wixson, Becky Rudolf, Peter Josephson, Todd Hunter and Paul Strand, and introduces James Stewart to NHTP’s stage.

Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. General admission is $24 ($18 for students and seniors). Pontine Theatre shows “Phyzgig” in vaudeville spirit: The Phyzgig Festival South is coming to Pontine’s West End Studio Theatre in Portsmouth for the fourth straight year. Performances are Monday to Friday, Dec. 26 to 30, at 2 p.m. 

Founded in 1997 in Portland, Maine, Phyzgig has become a popular family-oriented holiday festival. 

A celebration of variety shows and physical comedy, Phyzgig is held between Christmas and New Year’s Eve. Performances include clowning, juggling, magic, slapstick humor and other acts in the spirit of vaudeville.

This year includes a few new faces along with familiar favorites. Three performers will be featured for each show, including Michael Trautman of Physical Comedy Theatre, who will also serve as emcee. The first show also includes Randy Judkins and Phil Smith, then it’s Sam Kilborn and Lenny Zarcone for two shows, then Randy Judkins returns with Martin Shell. Wrapping it up, YoYo Guy John Higby and Dan Link will join the fun.

One-woman show, ‘Is there Fat in That?,’ comes to Portsmouth: Good Theater is bringing the first local production of “Is There Fat in That?” to The Players’ Ring in Portsmouth for a short holiday run. The show, starring and written by Ellen Domingos, will offer four performances from Thursday to Monday, Dec. 29 to Jan. 1.

The play tells a personal story about growing up in Maine, winning a national beauty pageant, becoming a working actress and model in New York City and, all the while, battling an eating disorder. It’s told with humor and music.

The play is directed and co-written by Brian P. Allen, and Victoria Stubbs is the musical director and arranger. The premiere was in Portland, Maine.

Performance times are Thursday at 7:30 p.m., Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m., and Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets are $15 ($12 for student and seniors), available by calling 603-436-8123 or visiting www.playersring.org. The Ring is at 105 Marcy St. in Portsmouth.
