Volunteers needed for new trail in Portsmouth
Plans for a new walking trail off Little Harbor Road in Portsmouth are nearly complete, and volunteers are needed to help construct it.
The Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests and the newly formed Friends of Creek Farm are spearheading efforts to create a 1.5-mile loop trail traversing the Creek Farm Reservation, the Wentworth Coolidge historic site and city-owned conservation land along Little Harbor Road. The trail will cut through mixed hardwood and pine forest with freshwater wetlands and salt marsh habitat.
Portsmouth environmental planner Peter Britz is asking volunteers of all ages and experience levels to help build the trail on Saturday, Oct. 29. Volunteers will meet at 9 a.m. in the Creek Farm parking lot, located down a short access drive off Little Harbor Road. Those interested should wear closed-toe shoes and long pants and bring work gloves, water and a bag lunch. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Organizers hope to complete all the work in a single day.
