Portsmouth police chief retiring

Portsmouth Police Chief David “Lou” Ferland, a 30-year veteran of the force, will retire in September, he announced at a recent Police Commission meeting. Deputy Chief Stephen DuBois will take his place.

Ferland became deputy chief in 2009 after Len DiSesa retired, then became chief days later after Michael Magnant resigned to become town administrator of Rye. DuBois was promoted to deputy chief at that time.

A full-time member of the force since 1993, DuBois will become the city’s 37th police chief (called “city marshal” until 1984) since the Portsmouth Police Department formed in 1850.
