Polls show support for unions
A new poll shows support for unions in New Hampshire and opposition to legislation that would limit the bargaining powers of public employees.
Conducted by the Benson Strategy Group in Washington, D.C., the poll found that only 38 percent of voters favor the agenda of Republicans in the state Legislature, down from 49 percent a year ago. A total of 51 percent oppose the Republican agenda, while 11 percent said they are not sure.
Specifically, 57 percent of voters said they oppose a bill that would end collective bargaining rights for public employees, while 35 percent favor such a bill. Only 32 percent think passing a “right to work” bill should be a top priority for the state, while 64 percent think it should not be a priority, at all.
The poll found that 51 percent of voters think unions are good, while 39 percent think they are bad and 10 percent are not sure. Only 12 percent of voters think public employees like teachers and police officers are paid too much, while 36 percent think they’re paid the right amount and 42 percent think they’re paid too little.
The poll also found continuing approval of Democratic Gov. John Lynch and growing disapproval of Republican House Speaker Bill O’Brien. Seventy-five percent approve of the job Lynch is doing, while just 21 percent disapprove. O’Brien, on the other hand, has a net favorability rating of -14 percent, down from -10 percent last May.
