NH gets more LIHEAP funding
New Hampshire will receive another $6.5 million in home heating aid from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. It’s the last payment the state will receive this winter for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program.
The latest payment brings New Hampshire’s total LIHEAP funding for fiscal year 2012 to more than $26 million. That’s still considerably less than FY 2011, when the state received more than $35.5 million in LIHEAP funds. The Energy Information Administration has projected that this winter’s average price of heating oil will be the highest in history—about 10 percent higher than last year.
Still, Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.) said the additional $6.5 million will help thousands of families procure heating assistance. Shaheen has opposed efforts by the Obama Administration and Congress to cut LIHEAP funding.
