Portsmouth budget schedule

Budget season is underway in Portsmouth, as the School Board held its first public hearing on the proposed fiscal year 2013 budget on Jan. 17. A number of other public hearings will follow in the coming weeks.

The Fire Commission will hold a public hearing on its proposed budget on Wednesday, Jan. 25 at 7 p.m., at Fire Station 2 on Lafayette Road. The Police Commission will follow with a hearing on Monday, Jan. 30 at 6 p.m., in the City Council chambers at City Hall on Junkins Avenue. The School Board will hold a second public hearing on Thursday, Feb. 9 at 7 p.m., in the Council chambers.

Proposed budgets from municipal departments are due back to the city Finance Department by Feb. 10. The proposed budgets will be reviewed by the Finance Department and the city manager before moving to the City Council in April. More public hearings will be held later in the spring.

Meanwhile, the Planning Board is at work on the city’s Capitol Improvement Budget, which will be submitted to the Council on Jan. 23. The Council will hold a public hearing on the CIP on Monday, March 5 at 7 p.m. at City Hall.
