Business plan for Hilltop School submitted

The Friends of Somersworth envisions a vibrant, multi-use facility at the former Hilltop School, bustling with resident artists and events. The group recently submitted a business plan for the proposed Hilltop Community Center to the city’s Economic Development Committee, which is expected to offer its endorsement of the project during the next City Council meeting on Monday, Nov. 14.

Presented during a meeting on Nov. 1, the proposal consists of a public-private partnership with the city to convert the former elementary school building into a public facility for arts, education and culture. The plan includes about 7,000 square feet of long-term lease space, mainly on the second and third floors, along with about 5,700 square feet of community and rental space. The rental units could be used as classrooms, art studios and meeting spaces for organizations.

Under the plan, the city would retain ownership of the building and provide services. The Friends of Somersworth, which is seeking tax-exempt status as a nonprofit organization, would establish a board of directors and hire a part-time executive director. The executive director would operate and manage the facility with assistance from volunteers and/or other paid staff members.
