Crime spree on the Seacoast

A spate of bank robberies and burglaries has occurred in the Port City and elsewhere in recent weeks, keeping police on high alert. In fact, the People’s United Bank on Islington Street in Portsmouth was robbed twice within six days.

The first robbery occurred on Saturday, Oct. 29 at about 11 a.m., and the second followed on Friday, Nov. 4 at about 9:30 a.m. In both cases, a white male suspect stole an undisclosed amount of cash from the bank, according to police. It’s uncertain whether the same suspect committed both robberies.

Also on Oct. 29, a series of burglaries took place around Portsmouth. Cash, merchandise and other items were taken from the Fertility Center of New England on Greenland Road, a doctor’s office on Lafayette Road, Tom’s Team Sales on West Road, and Eastern Mountain Sports on Arthur Brady Drive.

It’s unknown whether the crimes were related, but police called them “the latest in a growing number of burglaries in the city.” Patrol officers and detectives continue to investigate all the incidents.

Other recent robberies have occurred in neighboring communities. The TD Bank on Woodbury Avenue in Newington was robbed on Nov. 2, and the Profile Bank on Route 108 in Somersworth was robbed on Nov. 4.

Anyone with information on the Portsmouth crimes is asked to contact police at 603-436-2145 or make an anonymous report at 603-431-1199 or www.seacoastcrimestoppers.org. Newington police can be reached at 603-431-5461 and Somersworth police are at 603-692-3131.
