Exeter to vote on budget committee

Voters in Exeter will soon decide whether the town should adopt a new budget committee that would have broad decision-making powers. A vote on the proposed committee will come during a special town meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 25.

Exeter already has a Budget Recommendations Committee, but it mainly serves in an advisory capacity to the Board of Selectmen. The proposed 12-member committee would have greater power to make decisions regarding the municipal operating budget that goes before voters.

The town will vote on two warrant articles, one establishing the Budget Committee and another specifying its members. Both articles came from citizen petitions, the first circulated by Maureen Barrows and the second by Gerard Hamel, who would sit on the committee if the measure passes.

The town meeting takes place in Talbot Gymnasium at the Tuck Learning Center at 30 Linden St. Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. For more information, call the town clerk at 603-778-0591.
