group celebrates 100th conservation project
The Great Bay Resource Protection Partnership recently secured a 53-acre property in Madbury. It was the group’s 100th successful conservation project, bringing its total to 5,800 acres of conserved land around Great Bay.
Located along Route 108, the property was formerly owned by Wesley Brett, whose son Nick spearheaded the conservation effort. The family trust still owns the land, and the conservation easement is held by the N.H. Fish and Game Department.
The property includes 1,300 feet along Gerrish Brook, a tributary of Johnson Creek that connects to the tidal portion of the Oyster River. The area’s habitat is known to include the red fin pickerel, a species of concern in New Hampshire.
The Great Bay Resource Protection Partnership has now been operating for 17 years and has secured property including open fields, shrub land and forest. It has preserved 24 miles of tidal shoreline, 55 miles of stream frontage and 1,655 acres of wetlands. The land is used for hiking, snowshoeing, hunting, fishing and wildlife observation.
