two arrests at sobriety checkpoint

A weekend sobriety checkpoint in Portsmouth resulted in just two arrests, only one of which was for driving while intoxicated.

The Portsmouth Police Department conducted the checkpoint from 10:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 19, to 2 a.m. the following morning, screening a total of 229 vehicles. The Portsmouth Police ExplorerPost and Citizens Police Academy assisted.

It was the second straight checkpoint in Portsmouth to record a low number of arrests. A checkpoint conducted in July resulted in zero arrests.

The other man arrested at the Aug. 19 checkpoint is charged with a misdemeanor count of possession of marijuana.
