Durham man nominated as DOT commissioner

Gov. John Lynch recently nominated Durham man Chris Clement, a graduate of the University of New Hampshire, for commissioner of the New Hampshire Department of Transportation.

If confirmed, Clement will serve the remainder of former commissioner George Campbell’s term, which runs through December. Campbell resigned late last month to take a job in the private sector. Assistant commissioner Jeff Brillhart has been serving as interim commissioner since then.

Clement is currently director of the state Office of Economic Stimulus and formerly served as deputy commissioner and chief operating officer at the DOT. Before that, he worked for Goss International in Dover for 19 years.

Clement earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from UNH and a master’s in business administration from New Hampshire College (now Southern New Hampshire University). He began his career as a design engineer.

Lynch touted Clement’s leadership experience with the DOT and his managing of federal stimulus funds in the state. He must be confirmed by the Executive Council in order to adopt the job as DOT commissioner.
