Safe Routes to School grant for Durham
Durham is one of 10 New Hampshire communities that will receive federal funding for the Safe Routes to School program, helping enable and encourage children to safely walk or cycle to and from school.
The New Hampshire Department of Transportation recently announced that Durham will receive $30,751 in federal reimbursement grants toward the program, which is geared toward children in kindergarten through eighth grade, including those with disabilities, who live within about two miles of school.
A few other communities received considerably more funding, including Pittsfield ($260,668), Troy ($249,500) and Littleton ($206,680). Other grant recipients include Lebanon ($97,128), Bristol ($77,681), Hillsborough ($55,599), Manchester ($10,000), Northumberland ($8,000) and Nashua ($4,600).
The total of more than $1 million will be spent on efforts such as sidewalk improvements, traffic calming measures and educational outreach.
