Summer sobriety checkpoints starting

The Portsmouth Police Department will continue its enforcement of drunk driving this summer with sobriety checkpoints beginning this weekend.

Local police will work with New Hampshire State Police and the New Hampshire branch of Mothers Against Drunk Driving to conduct a checkpoint sometime during the weekend of Friday to Sunday, June 24 to 26. At sobriety checkpoints, officers monitor passing vehicles for drivers under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Police are required by law to offer advance notice of sobriety checkpoints. They did not provide the exact date, time or location of the upcoming checkpoint, but advised that it would occur sometime over the weekend.
