Sustainability Fair at new location

The fourth annual Sustainability Fair will take place at the Little Harbour School in Portsmouth on Saturday, May 14. The emphasis of this year’s event will be slow and local food, along with engaging environmental education for kids.

The fair is based around the principles of “The Natural Step” and it’s “Four System Conditions,” which are reducing dependence on fossil fuels, reducing dependence on synthetic chemicals, reducing encroachment on nature, and meeting human needs fairly and efficiently. Sustainability entrepreneurs in several fields will exhibit a variety of ideas, products and projects. There will also be live entertainment from the Leftist Marching Band, Red Sky Mary, and Tabbalat.

There is no admission fee, but guests are asked to donate reusable or recyclable items such as cell phones, ink cartridges, eyeglasses, books, CDs, DVDs, clothing, shoes or electronics. Items should be dropped off at the entry gate.

Related events include the Sustainability Fair Art Show, featuring art made from recycled materials, at Portsmouth Public Library through May 31, as well as a presentation on the Little Green Trail, a one-mile walking loop around downtown Portsmouth, at the Discover Portsmouth Center on May 14 at 1:30 p.m.

In past years, the Sustainability Fair was held outside Portsmouth Middle School, but organizers had to relocate this year due to construction on a major renovation project at the Middle School. The fair takes place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Little Harbour School at 50 Cough Drive. For more information, visit www.portsmouthsustainabilityfair.org.
