Pedestrian pathway reopens, work begins on other bridgees
The pedestrian pathway along the General Sullivan Bridge between Newington and Dover has reopened to pedestrians and cyclists, the N.H. Department of Transportation announced. The path had been closed since November due to work on the Little Bay Bridge rehabilitation project on Route 16.
Pedestrians and cyclists traveling through the construction zone on the Dover side of the bridge will be guided by temporary fencing. Cyclists still must walk their bicycles through the construction area until work in the vicinity of the pathway is complete, which should be around May 13. Travel in the park beneath the Little Bay Bridge is still prohibited indefinitely.
The $238 million project, scheduled for completion late in 2013, will double the bridge’s capacity from four to eight lanes to reduce traffic congestion and improve safety on a busy stretch of the Spaulding Turnpike.
The DOT has also announced work on several other Seacoast bridges. Crews are painting and conducting structural repairs on two bridges on Route 1B in Portsmouth and New Castle, both crossing the Piscataqua Estuary. The work, scheduled for completion on Oct. 28, will require lane closures and one-way traffic alternations.
Painting also has resumed on the southern approach of the Interstate 95 bridge that spans the Piscataqua River between Portsmouth and Kittery, Maine. The work should not impact traffic and is scheduled for completion on Sept. 30.
