Portsmouth's population has grown
The U.S. Census Bureau misreported the populations of Portsmouth and Hampton in its 2010 figures for New Hampshire, which were released late last month. Portsmouth’s population has actually grown by nearly 450 people over the last decade, while Hampton’s population has stagnated.
The Census Bureau announced that it had misallocated 454 military personnel aboard a naval vessel to Hampton. The personnel should have been allocated to Portsmouth, bringing its total population to 21,233. Hampton’s actual population is 14,976, meaning the town has grown by less than 40 people since 2000.
The Census Bureau had originally reported that Portsmouth’s population was 20,779, which would have represented a decrease of five people since 2000. The corrected figures represent a 2.2 percent increase—still far below the state’s total population growth of 6.5 percent and the national growth rate of roughly 10 percent.
