Organization touts economic benefits of RGGI
States participating in the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative have realized significant economic benefits from energy efficiency investments funded by the program, according to a recent report from Environment Northeast.
The report, released on March 21, indicates the 10-state cap-and-trade program has led to $1.11 billion in consumer savings, $2.62 billion in increased economic output, and 20,200 job years (one full-time job for one year).
In New Hampshire, the initiative has generated close to 1,500 jobs, along with $31.5 million in revenue, $27.7 million in energy efficiency funding, and $94.6 million in consumer savings, according to the report.
The N.H. House of Representatives has approved a bill that would withdraw the state from the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative. The bill still must be approved by the state Senate and signed by the governor.
Environment Northeast is a non-profit organization that researches and advocates policies that address environmental issues while promoting sustainable economies. To view the report in its entirety, visit www.env-ne.org.
