Navy approves $100 million for Shipyard

The U.S. Navy intends to invest approximately $100 million in facility upgrades and modernization work at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard during fiscal year 2012, senators from Maine and New Hampshire recently announced.

Congress still must authorize and appropriate the funds in the nation’s FY 2012 budget. If approved, the funding would be used for energy conservation and repairs to submarine enclosures, building renovations, repairs to the waterfront support facility, and structural repairs and consolidation of the yard’s workshops.

U.S. Senators Olympia Snowe (R-Maine), Susan Collins (R-Maine), Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.) and Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.) lauded the announcement in a joint statement released on March 10.
