Seeking input on the Portsmouth City Charter
Portsmouth’s newly formed City Charter Advisory Committee is seeking public input on potential changes to the City Charter. The group will hold a public hearing on Thursday, March 10, at Portsmouth City Hall.
Chaired by Assistant Mayor Nancy Novelline Clayburgh, the seven-member committee is charged with gauging public interest in making significant or minor changes to the City Charter. Mayor Tom Ferrini and the City Council have asked the committee to outline its recommendations in a report by June 30.
Like the U.S. Constitution, the City Charter provides guidelines for how the city is governed, including policies for elections, budget procedures, the makeup of boards and commissions, and more. Portsmouth’s charter has not been significantly revised since 1987 and was last amended in 2000.
The meeting begins at 7 p.m. on March 10 in the Eileen Dondero Foley City Council Chambers in the City Hall building at 1 Junkins Ave. It will be televised live on Cable Channel 22.
