NH residents skeptical about wars
Most New Hampshire residents are pessimistic about the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, according to a recent poll. The latest WMUR Granite State Poll, conducted by the University of New Hampshire Survey Center, shows that a majority of residents are doubtful about the progress of both wars.
The poll found that local opposition to the Iraq War is at an all-time high. Of the 520 adults polled, 60 percent said they oppose the war, while only 35 percent said they support it and 4 percent are neutral.
Only 34 percent of residents think the United States can win the war in Iraq. Nearly 50 percent of Republicans think the war is winnable, but less than 20 percent of Democrats share that view.
Nevertheless, most residents approve of the way President Barack Obama is handling the war in Iraq. Nearly 60 percent approve, while 32 percent disapprove and 9 percent are neutral.
Residents are not quite as confident about Obama’s overall handling of foreign affairs. Currently, 49 percent approve of the president’s foreign affairs policies, while 46 percent disapprove and 5 percent are neutral. Opinions fall largely along party lines, with approval from 86 percent of Democrats but only 19 percent of Republicans.
Only 38 percent of residents think the war in Afghanistan is going well, while 57 percent think it’s going badly and 5 percent don’t know. That’s a slight improvement from July, when 65 percent thought the war was going badly.
