poll: Romney is favorite among GOP candidates in N.H.
A recent poll of Republican primary voters in New Hampshire revealed former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney as the presidential frontrunner. Former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee came in a distant second, with former Alaska governor Sarah Palin on his heels.
Political consulting firm Strategic National used an automated phone message to survey a random sample of Republican voters in the state about potential presidential candidates in 2012. Of the 940 respondents, 33.5 percent named Romney as their top choice. Huckabee came in second with 13.8 percent. Palin, the 2008 vice presidential candidate, was third with just 12.8 percent.
Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich came in fourth with 8.6 percent, and former Minnesota governor Tim Pawlenty, who recently visited New Hampshire, came in fifth with 5.2 percent. A smattering of other Republicans received less than 2 percent each, including Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, and South Dakota Sen. John Thune. More than 22 percent were either undecided or preferred another candidate.
The survey also asked voters about potential gubernatorial candidates in 2012. Ovide Lamontagne, a 2008 U.S. Senate candidate, came in first with 37.3 percent, followed by 2008 gubernatorial candidate and former health commissioner John Stephen (14 percent), state Sen. Jeb Bradley (12.7 percent), and Manchester Mayor Ted Gatsas (3.6 percent). More than 32 percent selected “other.”
