New business districts in Dover
Officials in Dover hope two new zone districts will help local businesses reinvest in their property. The city recently received state approval to establish two more ERZ districts, adding to the three that were established about 18 months ago.
Planning director Christopher Parker described an ERZ district as an “economic recovery zone” where businesses receive incentives to make improvements.
“It’s a process by which businesses located within the district can apply for tax credits through the state business tax,” Parker said. “If a company would like to do some infrastructure investment, this is a way to upgrade machinery or bring on new employees.”
One of the new ERZ districts is located off Sixth Street in Enterprise Park, while the other is located off Mast Road between Route 108 and the Madbury town line. Parker said the city targeted the Sixth Street site to benefit its business park and the Mast Road site to benefit several gravel pits in the area.
The city had previously gotten approval to establish three ERZ districts in the downtown area, off Exit 7 of the Spaulding Turnpike, and off Exit 8 around an industrial park area. Parker said several businesses in those districts have aggressively taken advantage of the tax incentives.
