NH will host USS Virginia crew
A new breed of submarine will soon arrive at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for an extended stay. The USS Virginia nuclear submarine and its 134-person crew will undergo maintenance work at the shipyard for up to 18 months.
The first ever Virginia-class submarine is slated to arrive in Kittery in early September for an overhaul. Commissioned in October 2004 and based in Groton, Conn., it is longer and more technologically advanced than the Los Angeles-class subs the Shipyard typically handles.
Portsmouth will entertain many of the Virginia’s 13 officers and 121 enlisted men, and Mayor Tom Ferrini has established a host committee to help welcome the crew. City Councilor Robert Lister will chair the committee, and the city is still seeking other members. Those interested should call 603-610-7281.
The committee will help plan hospitality events for crew members, who are expected to help out with various community projects during their stay. Portsmouth officials will invite the crew to participate in the Holiday Parade on Dec. 4.
