Seacoast nightlife customized

Club Velocity introduces an interactive, mobile nightclub to the Seacoast

A new mobile nightclub is seeking to bring an “urban feel” to the Seacoast’s nightlife. On Saturday, March 10, Club Velocity will host its inaugural event at the Regatta Room in Eliot, Maine.

Owned by Seacoast-based management company High Velocity Events, the vision for Club Velocity came out of conversations with locals about what might be missing in the Seacoast nightlife. Other than the third-floor club at the Portsmouth Gas Light, nightclubs are hard to come by in the area.

“I have been doing events for a very long time and as I talked with various people in the Seacoast area, I realized that there was a gap in this kind of event,” said Karyn Morton-Clark, owner and event coordinator for High Velocity Events. “You can go to Boston, or you might be able to find something in Portland, but not here. I thought it would be a good idea to create something that would have that big-city feel.”

Morton-Clark said Club Velocity is unique for two major reasons: it travels between several venues and it is customizable. Club Velocity attendees can go to www.highvelocityevents.com prior to the event and participate in the music selection for the club through the Internet radio site Pandora.

Scotty Harris, Morton-Clark’s informal partner for the project, will DJ the inaugural event in Eliot. He said club attendees can visit the website to see his active radio station and some “top five” lists, as well as what he plans to play at the event. Attendees can make their own playlists and comment on Harris’s selections. Songs chosen by participants will take up at least an hour of the event, he said.

“We want cool stuff from a lot of different eras so that people can dance,” Harris said. “We want to focus on what people want to hear.” The catchphrase for the project, he said, is “no lame music.”

Morton-Clark said she plans to hold at least three more Club Velocity events this year, during each season and in various locations around the Seacoast. She intends to have a select beneficiary for each event so that part of the proceeds go toward providing services wherever they might be needed, locally or nationally.

Club Velocity can transport its equipment and facilities anywhere, according to Morton-Clark. She said High Velocity Events plans to keep the club centered on the Seacoast, but she is willing to let the club grow and expand over time.

Harris added that the music can change according to how the club grows. “Because it’s so customizable, we want to leave the options open,” he said.

The next Club Velocity event will likely take place in the late spring or early summer and will feature one or two live bands as headliners.

Club Velocity’s inaugural event runs from 7 p.m. to midnight. Tickets are $30 to $45, available at www.highvelocityevents.com. The Regatta Room is at 28 Levesque Drive in Eliot, Maine.
