MLK tribute in Portsmouth

The Leftist Marching Band will celebrate Martin Luther King Day with their annual tribute show on Monday, Jan. 16, at The Press Room in Portsmouth. Local jazz group FTET will continue the celebration upstairs.

With its arsenal of brass, reeds and drums, the Leftist Marching Band gives a progressive musical voice to the causes of equality, tolerance and civil liberties, all in a spirit of good fun. This will be the third straight year the 12-plus member group has performed at The Press Room in honor of Doctor King.

FTET is a jazz quartet composed of saxophonists Matt Langley and Nick Mainella, keyboardist Mike Effenberger and drummer Jim Rudolph. They, too, participated in The Press Room’s MLK bash last year.

Members of the Leftist Marching Band will join FTET for at least a couple of numbers, and Press Room manager Bruce Pingree will treat the audience to a spoken word component. Pingree will also collect donations for Seacoast Local’s (H)EAT campaign, which provides meals and fuel assistance for needy households.

The free concert begins with the Leftist set at 7 p.m. at The Press Room, 77 Daniel St., Portsmouth, 603-431-5186.
