Miss Tess CD release show at The Red Door

New York-based performer Miss Tess has won over many a local fan, showcasing her jazzy, throwback, vaudeville sound during several shows at The Red Door. She’ll return to the downtown Portsmouth venue in early January to introduce her new double-disc album, “Live Across the Mason Dixon Line.”

The recording consists of two live performances, one at the Regatta Bar in Cambridge, Mass., and the other at Eddie’s Attic in Decatur, Ga. Joining Tess are the three members of her backing band, The Bon Ton Parade.

A former Boston musician, Tess is a skilled singer who puts a fresh and lively spin on a timeless sound. In a sign of her eclectic style, she won a Boston Music Award for “Outstanding Folk Artist of the Year” in 2008, but the following year was nominated for “Best Jazz Act.” The Boston Phoenix nominated her for “Best Roots Act” in 2010, and she garnered another nomination for “Best Jazz Act” in 2011.

The show, a rare Friday night installment of the Hush Hush Sweet Harlot series, takes place on Jan. 6 at 8 p.m. at The Red Door, 107 State St., Portsmouth, 603-373-6827. There is a $10 cover charge.
