Benevento residency in Portsmouth

Brooklyn-based pianist Marco Benevento set the crowd roaring during his February show at The Red Door in Portsmouth, offering an eclectic set of circuit-bent sounds topped off with a titillating cover of “Bennie and the Jets.”

So thoroughly enjoyable was the gig for artist and audience alike that Benevento will return to The Red Door for a weekly residency later this month. He’ll play three consecutive Thursday nights on Oct. 20, Oct. 27 and Nov. 3.

Benevento is a prolific and inventive musician who formed half of the Benevento/Russo Duo and plays with Garage A Trois, Surprise Me Mr. Davis, Bitches Brew Revisited and other ensembles. He’s also a solo artist who released his latest CD, “Between the Needles and Nightfall,” in 2010. His traveling musical laboratory includes a classic upright piano, an attic of circuit-bent toys and various electronics.

Benevento is currently at work on his fourth solo album, due out in 2012. His shows in Portsmouth will feature solo sets, collaborations with his trio (Dave Dreiwitz on bass and Andy Borger on drums) and guest appearances.

Doors open at 8 p.m. for all three shows at The Red Door, 107 State St., Portsmouth, 603-373-6827. Tickets are $17 in advance or $20 at the door.
