New shows announced: J. Geils, BB King, Seacoast Guitar Society fall season
Seacoast Guitar Society announces fall schedule: The Seacoast Guitar Society will return to action this fall with monthly shows at the Remick Barn in York, Maine. The series kicks off with a performance from Cajun musician Yvette Landry on Sunday, Sept. 18 at 7 p.m.
Landry, making her first Seacoast appearance, is a Creole Cajun bass and accordion player from a musical family in Louisiana. She’s also a singer-songwriter and guitarist who’s been making waves with her new country album, “Should Have Known.”
Concerts at the barn continue with performances by fingerstyle guitarist Steve Baughman on Oct. 2 at 7 p.m., Scottish guitarist Tony McManus on Nov. 13 at 7 p.m., and Christmas shows with Harvey Reid and Joyce Andersen on Dec. 18 at 3 and 6 p.m. Reid and Andersen will also play a Christmas show at the First Parish Church in Dover on Dec. 23 at 7:30 p.m. (it might be moved to Dec. 16).
Tickets to shows at the Remick Barn are $15 for adults or $8 for students. For more information, call 207-363-1886 or visit www.seacoastguitar.org.
J. Geils heading to Salisbury Beach: Boston guitar legend J. Geils and other string masters will aim to peel the paint off the walls of the Blue Ocean Music Hall with a blistering rock concert. The J. Geils Showcase, also featuring Jeff Pitchell & Texas Flood and Gerry Beaudoin, comes to the Salisbury Beach venue on Friday, Sept. 9.
Geils played lead guitar for The J. Geils Band, which was at the forefront of Boston’s rock scene from the late 1960s to the mid ’80s and has reunited on several occasions since. Also featuring lead singer Peter Wolf, the band was a nominee for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year but was not selected for induction.
In Salisbury, Geils will join fellow rocker Jeff Pitchell and jazz guitarist Gerry Beaudoin. They’ll play a mix of hits from The J. Geils Band, as well as new tunes by Pitchell, all blending rock, pop, blues and soul.
The concert begins at 8 p.m. on Sept. 9 at the Blue Ocean Music Hall, 4 Oceanfront North, Salisbury, Mass., 978-462-5888. Tickets are $25.
B.B. King brings the blues to Hampton: It’s fair to wonder how much longer B.B. King can possibly keep touring. The blues legend will return to the Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom on Friday, Sept. 2, exactly two weeks before his 86th birthday.
King began recording in the late 1940s and has now released more than 50 albums. Sure, he’s tainted his legacy a bit with Burger King commercials, but after 60-plus years of recording, he’s earned the right to earn a few extra dollars. And his fairly heavy touring schedule this fall proves that King’s still got the blues bug.
King comes to town a couple of weeks after fellow blues legend Buddy Guy tore up The Music Hall in Portsmouth. Guy’s opener, 12-year-old guitar prodigy Quinn Sullivan, closed his set with an explosive performance of King’s classic “The Thrill Is Gone,” assuring a new generation of blues talent.
The concert begins at 8 p.m. on Sept. 2 at the Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom, 169 Ocean Blvd., Hampton, 603-929-4100. Tickets are $40 to $75.
