New shows announced: Redhookfest, Barnstormers in North Hampton, 10 bands at Church, Reggae cancelled in Rochester
Redhookfest Returns: The Redhook Brewery in Portsmouth will celebrate its 30th birthday with a full slate of live music, beer, food and other activities. Indie rocker Citizen Cope will headline the 15th annual RedhookFest on Saturday, Aug. 6.
Cope, a multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter who performs a soulful blend of blues, folk and hip-hop, will follow an impressive lineup that includes Mitten, Soulive, and Robert Randolph & the Family Band.
The all-ages festival will also feature a 40-foot climbing wall, a dunk tank, and a vendor village with games, activities and prizes from area businesses. And, of course, there will be plenty of Redhook beer and food.
The event begins at 2 p.m. on Aug. 6 at the Redhook Brewery, 1 Redhook Way, Pease International Tradeport, www.redhook.com. Tickets are $30 in advance or $40 day of show, $5 for kids 12 and under with an adult’s admission.
Vermont Reggae Festival cancelled in Rochester: The Vermont Reggae Festival, which was set to take place in August at the Rochester Fairgrounds, has been canceled.
A long-time annual tradition in Vermont, the festival encountered repeated setbacks this year. Unable to find an available location in their native state, organizers relocated to Rochester. The concert and campout was originally scheduled to take place on July 29 and 30 but was later pushed back to Aug. 19 and 20. On July 27, however, they announced the event had been canceled altogether.
The festival had already booked several internationally known reggae artists, including Grammy Award winner Mykal Rose. Organizers had expected to attract more than 2,000 attendees, according to their website.
Barnstormer tour heading to North Hampton: The Barnstormer tour is leaving the Midwest and heading for the East Coast in August, starting with a concert in a barn at Runnymede Farm in North Hampton on Friday, Aug. 26.
Among the featured acts will be Rhode Island-based indie rock band Deer Tick, who recently played a benefit show for the Boys and Girls Club at The Page in Portsmouth (hopefully front man John McCauley has recovered from the deep cut he suffered on his hand after punching a cymbal during that gig). Other bands include White Rabbits, We are Augustines, Blood Orange and Doug Paisley.
The show in North Hampton kicks off a tour that will continue through Sept. 3 with shows in New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois, Michigan and Iowa. For more information, visit www.daytrotter.com.
The event in North Hampton is one of several performances Runnymede Farm is planning this summer. They’ll also host a show on Saturday, Aug. 20, in collaboration with 3S Artspace, featuring Mountain Man, Mmoss, Brown Bird, Ducktails, and Alex Bleeker and the Freaks.
The Barnstormer concert begins at 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 26 at Runnymede, 19 Maple Road, North Hampton. Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the door.
Stone Church adds acts to festival: The recently revamped Stone Church music club in Newmarket will host a daylong celebration of local music this weekend. “A Midsummer’s Pipe Dream” will bring more than 10 local bands to the venue on Saturday, July 30.
Among the featured acts are Gnarlemagne, Mmoss, the Attic Bits, Fiveeightthirteen, Tan Vampires, Comma, Gramafoma, Moe Pope, Jazzputin, Josh Watkinson, and Donkilo Afro Funk. Others could be added as the event approaches.
The concert follows in the footsteps of the “Cocheco Music Fest” held last summer. Some of the bands are returning from last year, while others are new to the festival. But they’re all familiar pillars of the local scene.
The Stone Church closed and reopened under new management earlier this summer, but the club’s dedication to local artists has not changed. The music will begin outside in the parking lot at noon and move indoors for the evening. It celebrates both the Church’s revival and the wealth of talent on the Seacoast.
The $10 ticket price includes access to all the music and food. The Stone Church is at 5 Granite St. in Newmarket. For more information, visit www.stonechurchrocks.com or find the event on Facebook.
