Art without limits: 3s and partners bring the arts outside with Fountains of Wayne, Sub Rosa and more
Although 3S Artspace does not yet have a physical home, the organization is taking advantage by bringing the arts to open spaces around the Seacoast. The 3S team is partnering with several other local groups to present outdoor concerts, films, visual arts and more at various locations this summer.
Co-founded by Chris Greiner and John Gayle, 3S Artspace is expected to open next year at the Fermentation Building, part of the former Frank Jones Brewery complex off Islington Street in Portsmouth. The venue will have a restaurant, art gallery and concert hall and will feature both local and national artists and performers. Greiner and Gayle recently signed a lease on the building and plan to open in the fall of 2012.
In the meantime, they’re seeking to spread awareness about their plans with public events around the region. Perhaps the biggest highlight is 3S Fest, which will take place at Prescott Park on Saturday, Aug. 27. A partnership with the Prescott Parks Arts Festival, the event will include performances by Fountains of Wayne, Mike Doughty, Soft Swells and Tan Vampires.
Fountains of Wayne, a Grammy Award-nominated power-pop band out of New York, and Mike Doughty, an indie-rock singer-songwriter and former front man of Soul Coughing, both carry international stature. Soft Swells is a new bi-coastal collaboration between musicians in Los Angeles and New York. Pop-rock band Tan Vampires, who just released their debut CD, are staples of the Seacoast scene.
The mix of national acts and a local favorite fits in with the 3S vision. Greiner said the festival is aimed at letting people know what the organization is all about while offering a fun summer concert.
“Really, the primary goal is to raise awareness. We want the park filled with people and we want people to have a great time,” he said.
The festival takes place from 5 to 11 p.m. on Aug. 27 at Prescott Park on Marcy Street. A suggested donation of $10 will be collected at the gate.
The Sub Rosa Drive-In also has partnered with 3S to present outdoor movies at the Fermentation Building, located at 13 Jewell St. behind the CVS on Islington Street. Founded by Larry Clow and Bryan White, Sub Rosa previously presented cult classic films at Simply Green Biofuels and other locations in Dover, replicating the vintage drive-in experience. They now move to Portsmouth to project on the brick screen of 3S Artspace’s future home.
The series begins on Friday, July 22, with a screening of the 2002 horror-comedy “Bubba Ho-Tep.” It will continue every other Friday through September, with all shows beginning at 9 p.m. Future installments will include “Danger: Diabolik” on Aug. 5, “Hairspray” on Aug. 19, “Phantom of the Paradise” on Sept. 2, “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” on Sept. 16, and “The Blues Brothers” on Sept. 30.
On Thursday, Aug. 18 at 6 p.m., the Arts in Reach program will partner with 3S to present its Street Art Showcase. AIR offers artistic mentoring to teenage girls with after-school and vacation programs. Participants in the organization’s summer camp will show off the culmination of their work with a mural at 11 Jewell St., along with a street-inspired theater performance of song and dance.
The 3S founders helped secure the location adjacent to the Fermentation Building and will have a table at the event, offering information about 3S and food provided by chef Sam Ostrow, who will use local ingredients from Brookford Farm in Rollinsford. Greiner said it’s a way to highlight the culinary aspect of the 3S vision while adding another cultural component to AIR’s celebration.
Runnymede Farm in North Hampton also is partnering with 3S to present an outdoor concert on Saturday, Aug. 20 at 6 p.m. The show will feature acts from around the Northeast, including Mmoss, Brown Bird, Mountain Man, Ducktails and Alex Bleeker and the Freaks.
The 3S team is helping to produce the show, but all proceeds will benefit the Runnymede Project, an artist-driven project aimed at rethinking people’s relationship to the environment, time and each other.
The Runnymede concert is part of an “open space series” 3S is launching under the tagline, “art without limits.” Greiner said he plans to add other shows in coming months, including visual art exhibitions in public spaces.
“It’s going to encompass all manner of events in different locations with different partners going forward until we have our own space,” Greiner said.
