New shows announced: The Pixies, Gillian Welch and Bruce Hornsby

Hampton Beach books The Pixies: It was 25 years ago that The Pixies first came together outside Boston. The quartet went on to help spearhead the alternative rock movement in the late ’80s and early ’90s, releasing five albums. Although they subsequently broke up for more than a decade, they have been touring sporadically since 2004, and they’ll perform at the Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom on the eve of Halloween.

The Pixies’ local appearance is part of the band’s ongoing Doolittle Tour, which began in 2009 to commemorate the 20th anniversary of their 1989 album “Doolittle.” The tour has taken them to major cities around the globe, but they recently announced a series of shows at “secondary U.S. markets” beginning in October.

The original foursome of singer and guitarist Black Francis, lead guitarist Joey Santiago, bassist Kim Deal and drummer David Lovering will play every song from “Doolittle,” including favorites like “Debaser,” “Wave of Mutilation,” “Here Comes Your Man,” “Hey” and “Gouge Away,” as well as related B-sides from the album.

The concert will also include a dozen original films projected on a massive video screen to accompany 12 of the show’s 21 songs. The set will feature some trippy props and visual effects, including several giant, floating spheres and a lightshow.

The concert begins with an opening set from Surfer Blood on Sunday, Oct. 30 at 8 p.m., at the Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom, 169 Ocean Blvd., Hampton, 603-929-4100, www.casinoballroom.com. Tickets are $39 in advance or $41 day of show. They go on sale to the general public on Friday, July 15 at 10 a.m.

Music Hall nabs Hornsby and Welch: Tickets will soon go on sale for two newly booked shows at The Music Hall in Portsmouth. The legendary Bruce Hornsby and The Noisemakers return to town in September, and bluegrass icon Gillian Welch follows in November. Both will be touring in support of freshly minted new CDs.

Hornsby is perhaps best known for his various collaborations with the likes of the Grateful Dead, Bob Dylan, Bob Seger, Willie Nelson, Bonnie Raitt and others. The Grammy Award-winning performer has sold more than 11 million albums worldwide, and his latest, “Bride of the Noisemakers,” came out this spring.

Hornsby’s concert at The Music Hall takes place Saturday, Sept. 3 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $59 to $48 and will be available to the general public beginning July 23.

Welch, also a Grammy winner, returns to Portsmouth after appearing at The Music Hall with the Dave Rawlings Machine in June 2010. She’ll once again be joined in Portsmouth by Rawlings, her long-time musical partner, but this time in support of her own new CD, “The Harrow and the Harvest.”

Welch will perform on Saturday, Nov. 26 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $32 and will be available to the general public beginning July 16.

For tickets and more information, visit The Music Hall box office at 28 Chestnut St. in Portsmouth, or call 603-436-2400 or visit www.themusichall.org.
