Dropkick Murphy's to play Fenway

Dropkick Murphys, the Celtic punk band fronted by Portsmouth resident Al Barr, will perform two concerts at Fenway Park in Boston in September. Tickets to the shows on Sept. 8 and 9 go on sale on Thursday, July 7 at noon.

A portion of proceeds from the concerts will benefit the families of 9/11 victims through the Massachusetts 9/11 Fund. Boston-based ska-punk legends The Mighty Mighty Bosstones will open both shows.

Dropkick Murphys has long been a favorite of Red Sox fans. Their reworking of the old Broadway tune “Tessie” served as the anthem of the team’s 2004 World Series championship run. Their song “I’m Shipping Up to Boston” plays every time closer Jonathan Papelbon takes the mound. The band has performed at Fenway before, but these will be their first full-length concerts in the ballpark.

The Dropkicks will join the ranks of past legends to perform at Fenway, including The Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen, Aerosmith, Neil Diamond, Jimmy Buffett, The Police, Dave Matthews Band and Phish.

Tickets will be available at www.redsox.com/dropkicks or 877-733-7699.
