Jazz and art improv in Kittery

Guests at The Dance Hall can indulge several senses and witness spontaneous art creation during a unique event at the new Kittery venue. “In Ears ’n’ Eyes,” a live, improvised evening of jazz music and painting, takes place on Friday, June 3.

Sizzling saxophonist Matt Langley and his band Color (dubbed Hue for this event) will perform improvisational jazz while visual artist Roger Goldenberg paints jazz-inspired work onstage. Video DJ Mike Marchand will add yet another artistic dimension to the proceedings with projected visual images.

Langley and Goldenberg both have prior experience performing with artists of other disciplines. Color has provided live, original soundtracks to silent films at fundraising events for the Portsmouth Halloween Parade. Goldenberg painted in front of a live audience during New Hampshire Theatre Project’s recent production of “Jacque Brel Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris.”

Langley devised the idea for a show combining live music and visual art and approached Goldenberg, a long-time friend. The pair found a perfect venue when Drika Overton opened The Dance Hall at the former Kittery Grange Hall. Langley’s band mates for the evening will include multi-instrumentalist Johnny Peiffer, percussionist Jamie Decato and guitarist Jim Dozet, both highly active musicians in the local jazz scene.

The event begins at 9 p.m. on June 3 at The Dance Hall, 7 Walker St., Kittery, Maine, 207-703-2083. Tickets are $10 in advance or $15 at the door, available at www.thedancehallkittery.org. There will also be a silent auction and raffle.
