New shows announced: Emmylou Harris, Sleepy Wonder, Pretty Reckless

The Brick House gets Reckless:  The Pretty Reckless is helmed by a national teen idol and backed by a trio of musicians with strong local ties. A year after playing around the U.S. on the Warped Tour bill and touring the UK, the band will offer an up-close show at the Dover Brick House on Saturday, May 28.

The group is fronted by Taylor Momsen, a singer, model and actress who costars on the CW television series “Gossip Girl.” Her band includes drummer Jamie Perkins and bassist Mark Damon, both Seacoast natives, as well as guitarist Ben Phillips—the trio behind New York-based rock band Famous.

The show will carry some nostalgia for long-time local rockers, as several veterans of the Seacoast scene will share the stage. Opening for The Pretty Reckless will be Swamp Yankee, consisting of Perkins with vocalist Dave Nebbia, guitarist Jon McCormack, and bassist Sean LaRose, as well as Tim McCoy and the Papercuts.

The Pretty Reckless released their hard rocking debut album “Light Me Up” late last summer. This is a rare chance to catch them in an intimate local venue. Just days after the Brick House gig, the band departs on a summer tour of Europe.

The 18-plus show begins at 9 p.m. on May 28 at the Dover Brick House, 2 Orchard St., Dover, 603-749-3838. Tickets are $16, available in advance at www.doverbrickhouse.com.

Hip-hop at Redhook: Dub/reggae/hip-hop artist Sleepy Wonder, a member of Washington, D.C., sensation Thievery Corporation, has made the Seacoast a regular gigging destination of late. After a sold-out show at Foobar in Portsmouth this winter, he’ll return for a multi-act show at the Redhook Brewery on Saturday, May 21.

Wonder will again perform with the collective ensemble Superska, featuring former members of Bim Skala Bim, The Heavy Metal Horns, The Skatellites and Steady Earnest. The band will also feature special guest Dion Knibb of the Agitators. MC B-Cap, formerly of Seacoast hip-hop band The Press Project, will open the show.

This may be Wonder’s last local show for a while, as the New York-based artist will head out on tour with Thievery Corporation this summer in support of their forthcoming studio album, “Culture of Fear,” due out in June.

Presented by WXGR, the show begins at 8 p.m. at the Redhook Brewery, 1 Redhook Way, Pease Tradeport, Portsmouth, 603-430-8600. The doors will open at 7 p.m. with music from the Green Lion Crew. Tickets are $15 in advance or $20 at the door. WXGR will broadcast the show live at 101.5 FM and www.wxgrfm.org.

Emmylou Harris hits the Hall: Country legend Emmylou Harris will bring her 40 years of singing and songwriting experience to Portsmouth this summer. The 12-time Grammy Award winner will perform at The Music Hall in the Intimately Yours concert series on Friday, July 29.
Now 64, Harris is known both for her original songs and her eloquent interpretations of work by other artists. She has worked as a solo act and bandleader, and has collaborated with everyone from Bob Dylan to Conor Oberst.
The concert will mark Harris’s first appearance on the Seacoast since October 2009, when she performed at the Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom. Folk-pop duo The Civil Wars will open the show in Portsmouth.
The concert begins at 8 p.m. on July 29 at The Music Hall, 28 Chestnut St., Portsmouth, 603-436-2400, www.themusichall.org. Tickets are $82 to $70, available to the general public beginning Wednesday, June 1. For every ticket sold, $1 will go to Bonaparte’s Retreat, a Nashville-based dog rescue organization.
