New record stores open in Portsmouth and Dover

Vinyl enthusiasts had a couple of extra options to choose from on Record Store Day, April 16, as two new record stores recently opened on the Seacoast. SkeleTone Records and Alternative Fashion opened in downtown Portsmouth in February, and Spun opened its doors in Dover in April.

SkeleTone buys and sells records, tapes and CDs, specializing in punk and classic rock albums. The store at 130 Congress St. also offers custom and vintage T-shirts and homemade dresses.

Co-owners Todd Radict and “Kenny Kendra” are from Portsmouth but moved to New York City for several years, where Kendra worked at clothing stores. When they returned to the area, they saw a need for a music store, Radict said.

He became a partner at Odyssey and Oracle, a record store located a few blocks away on Fleet Street. But he split with Odyssey because he wanted to focus more on punk rock and offer more clothing, he said. The store also promotes local punk shows.

Located at 266 Central Ave., Spun specializes in vintage records, CDs, tapes, concert shirts and music memorabilia. Owner Mark Matarozzo said he has been collecting music for more than 20 years and now wants to share with the community.

Radict said he is friends with Matarozzo and welcomes the addition of more record stores in the area. Although Odyssey and Oracle and Bull Moose are within blocks of SkeleTone, he believes there’s enough business to go around, especially with rising demand for vinyl and cassette tapes.
