New shows announced: choral music, Free Energy and Rebirth

Rebirth to party in Portsmouth: The Rebirth Brass Band will bring its funky New Orleans sound to The Music Hall in Portsmouth on Friday, April 8. Local favorite Gnarlemagne will open the show with their own soulful horn lines.

Formed in 1983, Rebirth consists of at least nine members on trumpets, trombones, tuba, saxophone and drums. The blend elements of jazz, soul and hip-hop to bring a live party to the stage. Over the years, they’ve shared the stage with The Grateful Dead, The Meters, the P-Funk All-Stars, Maceo Parker, Dr. John, Ani DiFranco and others.

The show begins at 8 p.m. on April 8 at The Music Hall, 28 Chestnut St., Portsmouth, 603-436-2400, www.themusichall.org. Tickets are $32 to $20.

Free Energy hits new Dover venue: A new performance venue in Dover will host its first major show with a nationally touring band later this month. Philadelphia-based “bang-pop” quintet Free Energy will play the Rivermill at Dover Landing on Friday, April 29.

Rivermill opened in February in a mill building on Washington Street, along the banks of the Cochecho River in downtown Dover. With capacity for up to 350 guests, the facility hosts concerts, wedding receptions, meetings and other events.

Formerly known as Hockey Night and based in Minnesota, Free Energy relocated to Philadelphia and released its debut album “Stuck on Nothing” in 2010. Blending elements of rock, glam and power pop, the band has toured with Weezer and recently performed on “The Late Show with David Letterman.”

The 18-plus show begins at 7 p.m. on April 29 at Rivermill, 2 Washington St., Dover, 603-343-2192, www.rivermillnh.com. Tickets are $15.

choral concerts this spring: The Rockingham Choral Society will offer a series of spring concerts in the area, with proceeds benefiting tsunami victims in Japan. The shows take place on Friday, April 29 in Rye; Saturday, April 30 in Hampstead; and Sunday, May 1 in Exeter.

The concerts will consist of performances of “Mass in G” by Franz Schubert, as well as selections from “My Song in the Night” and “Four American Folk Hymns” arranged by Mack Wilberg, director of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.

Formed in 1957, the Rockingham Choral Society performs two major concerts per year, one in the spring and one around Christmas. The group, with singers and orchestral players from New Hampshire and Maine, is directed by Andrew Gaydos.

The April 29 show begins at 7:30 p.m. at Rye Congregational Church, 580 Washington Road, Rye. The April 30 show begins at 7:30 p.m. at St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church, 187 East Road, Hampstead. The May 1 show begins at 3:30 p.m. at Christ Church, 43 Pine St., Exeter.
