New shows announced: Wolf, Ice, Led, lang, and more

Peter Wolf plays Salisbury: Peter Wolf’s website has a photo gallery featuring pictures of the soulful singer hanging out with Howlin’ Wolf, John Lee Hooker, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Bruce Springsteen, Steven Tyler, Van Morrison and Little Richard. And those are just a few of the musical pals he’s made over the last 40-plus years.

Wolf is best known as the former long-time singer for Boston’s J. Geils Band, but he’s also built a successful solo career as a musician and painter. He’ll perform his music at the Blue Ocean Music Hall in Salisbury, Mass., on Sunday, March 20.

Wolf has led a remarkable life, painting in the studio of Norman Rockwell as a child, rooming with filmmaker David Lynch in college, and fronting a band for which U2 once opened. He also founded the Boston FM radio station WBCN. His seventh solo album, “Midnight Souvenirs,” came out in April 2010.

The show begins at 7 p.m. on March 20 at the Blue Ocean Music Hall, 4 Oceanfront North, Salisbury, Mass., 978-462-5888, www.blueoceanhall.com.

rap legend Just-Ice heads to Newmarket: One of rap’s original gangstas will headline an upcoming evening of hip-hop at The Stone Church in Newmarket. New York rapper Just-Ice will join at least six other acts at the Church on Saturday, March 19. Just-Ice emerged out of Brooklyn in the mid 1980s to become one of hardcore rap’s early pioneers. The gold-toothed rapper gained notoriety with his debut 1986 album “Back to the Old School,” featuring fellow legend DMX, and continued to release hits throughout the remainder of the decade.

Although he continued to record albums on independent labels in the 1990s, Ice’s prominence faded as a new generation of hip-hop stars took the spotlight. But he is attempting a comeback, joining KRS-One to release “The Just-Ice & KRS-One EP, Volume 1” in 2010.

The event in Newmarket, called Attack of the Killer Classics, will also feature Lyrical, Defrock and DJ Miles Maker, Ape and Undu, Dubious and Canaan, One Life, and Redeye, with music provided by the Order 66 DJ Crew.

The show begins at 9 p.m. on March 19 at The Stone Church, 5 Granite St., Newmarket, 603-659-0878. Tickets are $10 in advance or $12 at the door.

Led and lang in Portsmouth: The Music Hall in Portsmouth has announced two big shows coming up this summer. Led Zeppelin tribute band Get the Led Out comes to town on Saturday, June 4, and singer-songwriter k.d. lang follows on Tuesday, July 12.

Get the Led Out is a six-piece outfit that strives to accurately recreate every sonic detail of Led Zeppelin’s rock anthems. Lang is a multi-Grammy Award winning singer who is touring with her new band, The Siss Boom Bang, which will soon release its new CD “Sing It Loud.”

Get the Led Out performs at 8 p.m. on June 4; tickets are $32 to $25. The lang show begins at 7:30 p.m. on July 12; tickets are $115 to $75. Tickets to both shows are on sale now to Music Hall members and will be available to the general public beginning March 29. The Music Hall is at 28 Chestnut St., Portsmouth, 603-436-2400, www.themusichall.org.

Quartet New Generation in Durham: Equipped with a vast arsenal of recorders of all shapes and sizes, Quartet New Generation will head to the University of New Hampshire in early April. The group will participate in the UNH Celebrity Series at the Paul Creative Arts Center’s Johnson Theatre in Durham on Friday, April 8.

The quartet uses upwards of 30 different recorders to explore early and contemporary music with high-energy performances. Founded in 1998, the group has toured around the world and won numerous awards while helping to establish the recorder as a legitimate modern classical instrument. They perform a number of European works and have begun commissioning American composers, as well.

The show begins at 7 p.m. Tickets are $30 general admission or $10 for youths, available at the Memorial Union Building, 603-862-2290, www.unhmub.com.

Portsmouth Library presents traditional music: Portsmouth Public Library will offer three free monthly concerts this spring, beginning with composer and multi-instrumentalist John Hughes on Sunday, March 27 at 2 p.m. The Music from the Traditions series continues with Jah Spirit on Thursday, April 14 at 7 p.m., and The Strathspey and Reel Society of New Hampshire on Sunday, May 1 at 2 p.m.

Hughes, a kora player, percussionist and vocalist based in Vermont, creates innovative original grooves and traditional West African music. Jah Spirit is a New England reggae band that has performed with such acts as Jimmy Cliff, Israel Vibrations, and Toots and the Maytals, among others. The Strathspey Reel Society is a 20-plus musician collective that plays new and traditional Scottish tunes.

All three shows take place in the Levenson Room at Portsmouth Library, 175 Parrott Ave., Portsmouth, 603-427-1540.
