New Black Eagle Jazz Band at UNH

On Monday, Jan. 31, the New Black Eagle Jazz Band will ignite a late January thaw when they take the Johnson Theatre stage at the University of New Hampshire in Durham for an evening of pure traditional jazz at 8 p.m.

The concert continues the 2010-2011 season of the UNH Traditional Jazz Series and will mark the 10th appearance of this venerable band in the series—the most appearances of any group, so far.

For nearly 40 years the Black Eagles, as they are commonly known, have been regaling audiences all over the world with their pure and concise interpretations of the music of King Oliver, Bix Beiderbecke, Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington, among numerous early jazz greats. Based in Boston, the band is led by cornet player Tony Pringle, a native of England who has called New England home for many years. Pringle’s steadfast commitment to early jazz is the foundation on which this remarkable band has been built, with all of the members sharing a deep devotion and dedication to the music they play. The results are high-spirited performances with a dose of humor.

For ticket info, call 603-862-2290. Tickets are $8 for the general public, or $6 for students and seniors. For more information on the Traditional Jazz Series, visit www.unh.edu/music.
