RPM Kick-Off Party in Portsmouth

For RPM Challenge participants, there are only a few nights remaining before the sleepless month of February is upon us. Area musicians can enjoy one last night of freedom during the Portsmouth Kick-off Party, to be held at The Press Room on Monday, Jan. 31. Other participants around the globe are encouraged to launch simultaneous parties of their own.

Now in its sixth year, the RPM Challenge urges musicians to write and record an entire CD of at least 10 songs or 35 minutes of original music during the 28 days of February. Those who complete their CDs will have their music added to the online RPM jukebox and will be invited to celebrate at regional listening parties in March. Participants can register at www.rpmchallenge.com.

The kick-off party offers musicians a chance to meet and share ideas as they gear up for the long month ahead, or just sedate themselves with strong beer to ensure a good night’s sleep. RPM creators and organizers from The Wire will be in attendance.

People interested in coordinating their own kick-off parties can post information about their plans on the RPM discussion board and e-mail fellow participants through the website. All you need to do is designate a watering hole or gathering place and spread the word, then rejoice in the last few hours before the challenge begins.

The local party takes place from 6 to 8 p.m. on Jan. 31 at The Press Room, 77 Daniel St., Portsmouth, 603-431-5186.
