Singers wanted for Seacoast Idol

If you can sing, this may be just the thing. This year’s Seacoast Idol auditions will be held Saturday, Jan. 15, beginning at 9 a.m. at Exeter Town Hall.

All ages can audition within one of three categories: 17 and under, 18 to 39, and 40 and over. Judges will consider vocal tonality and range, volume and pitch, originality in expression, stage presence, theater moves, connection to audience, marketability, and overall performance.

The event, formerly known as Karaoke Idol, is being sponsored by the Exeter Rotary Club for the fifth year. Organizer Sandy Martin said most people won’t be singing original songs, but they may make it personal. “The judges like to see how the singers put themselves into that song,” he said.

The roughly 12 to 18 qualifiers will then advance to the finals, held on Friday, Feb. 18, at the Rockingham Ballroom in Newmarket. Martin said the finals had become the second highest attended event at the Town Hall, and this year they’ll take place in a larger venue. Tickets will be $35.

Prizes for the top three performers are $1,000 for first place, and $250 and $150 for runners-up. Martin said the experience can lead to other opportunities, as well.

Half the proceeds this year will support Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Greater Seacoast, and the other half goes toward Exeter Rotary local programs, including New Outlook Teen Center, Interfaith Hospitality Network, Exeter Food Pantries, Exeter Chamber Children’s Fund, Hospice, Exeter Recreation Youth Programs, Salvation Army, Special Olympics, YMCA Camp Lincoln in Kingston and NHSPCA.
