Portsmouth Symphony Orchestra in Concert
The Portsmouth Symphony Orchestra will join forces with guest conductor John Page to present two works from opposite ends of the globe—both geographically and politically. The “Freedom vs. Tyranny” concert takes place at The Music Hall in Portsmouth on Sunday, Nov. 14.
Page is an Irish conductor who began his professional career with the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland in 2000. Joining him will be guest violin soloist Alexander Romanul, a Boston-born musician of Romanian descent.
The orchestra will perform Barber’s Violin Concerto of 1939, which came from the pen of a young American composer, and Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5 of 1937, which stems from Stalin-era Soviet Russia.
The concert begins at 3 p.m. on Nov. 14 at The Music Hall, 28 Chestnut St., Portsmouth, 603-436-2400, www.themusichall.org. Tickets are $20 for the general public, $18 for seniors or $8 for college and under.
