Locals record with Godsmack front man

If you visit Sully Erna’s Web site and click on the link for “Band,” you might notice a couple of familiar faces pictured in the lineup. The Godsmack singer’s new CD, “Avalon,” features Seacoast musicians Tim Theriault on guitar and vocals and Chris Decato on keyboards and vocals.

Released in September, “Avalon” is Erna’s solo debut, but he’s no stranger to the recording process. Formed in Massachusetts in the mid 1990s, Godsmack has recorded a string of top-selling albums and radio hits. Erna spent years working on “Avalon,” which presents a more toned-down, eclectic sound than Godsmack’s metal.

Theriault is one of the Seacoast’s most active guitarists, playing gigs almost every night (he’s got upcoming shows at Ri Ra Irish Pub in Portsmouth on Oct. 21, Inn on the Blues in York on Oct. 22, The Dolphin Striker in Portsmouth on Oct. 23, and Fury’s Publick House in Dover on Oct. 26). A repeat participant in The Wire’s RPM Challenge, Theriault is one of the most talented rock guitarists on the local scene.

Decato is a multi-instrumentalist, producer and engineer at the helm of Decato Sound, which he launched in 2000. While Theriault showcases his blistering guitar skills on “Avalon,” Decato arranged orchestral keyboard parts. Both also assisted in writing some of the compositions and lent their own creative stamps to the songs.

It’s a notable coup for the pair of locals, and another recent example of Seacoast musicians taking the national spotlight. Bassist Mark Damon and drummer Jamie Perkins are members of teen star Taylor Momsen’s band The Pretty Reckless, which performed across the country in Warped Tour this summer.
