Soul queen Buika to sing in Portsmouth

The daughter of political refugees from Equatorial Guinea, Buika’s music features a stew of world styles from Spain, Africa, Cuba, Mexico and the United States. She’ll bring her global tastes to The Music Hall in Portsmouth on Sunday, Oct. 24.

Buika is touring in support of her latest CD, “El Ultimo Trago,” which has garnered two Latin Grammy awards. Translating to “The Last Drink,” the album pays homage to legendary Mexican singer Chavela Vargas. Buika also recently recorded a duet with Seal titled “You Get Me,” which will appear on Seal’s new CD.

Blending flamenco, soul, blues and jazz, Buika’s smoky voice has drawn comparisons to Tina Turner and Sarah Vaughan, earning her a title as an Afro Flamenco Soul Queen. Raised in a gypsy community on the Spanish island of Palma De Mallorca, she was discovered by filmmaker Pedro Almodovar, whose new movie

“La Piel Que Habito” (The Skin I’m In) will mark Buika’s screen debut.
The concert begins at 7 p.m. on Oct. 24 at The Music Hall, 28 Chestnut St., Portsmouth, 603-436-2400, www.themusichall.org. Tickets are $30 to $38.
