Six a capella groups join forces

Sick of all those screechy instruments interfering with the vocals? This just might be the concert for you. Six local a cappella acts are joining forces for a concert at Oyster River High School in Durham on Saturday, Oct. 16.

Billed as “Strictly A Cappella,” the show will feature two Granite State barbershop choruses and four a cappella choruses from the University of New Hampshire. The acts include the New Hampshire Gentlemen, an all-male group celebrating its 30th anniversary; the New Hampshire Notables, an all-female group at UNH; Alabaster Blue, with a mix of male and female singers; Not Too Sharp, a newer all-male ensemble; the Seacoast Vocal Union, an all-male barbershop chorus; and the Sounds of the Seacoast Women’s Barbershop Chorus.

According to Seacoast Vocal Union founder Jim Dodge, the six-way collaboration marks the first time in New England history that men’s and women’s barbershop choruses have combined with all four of UNH’s a cappella groups.

The concert begins at 7 p.m. on Oct. 16 at Oyster River High School, 55 Coe Drive, Durham. Tickets are $10 for the general public or $5 for students, available by calling UNH at 603-862-2290 or the Seacoast Vocal Union at 603-436-3025.
