Santana drummer joins Mary Gatchell in Epping

Singer and pianist Mary Gatchell regularly offers concerts at the Leddy Center in Epping, but an upcoming performance will also include a special guest. Grammy Award-winning drummer Rodney Holmes will take the stage with Gatchell on Friday, Oct. 1.

Gatchell and her band perform a mix of jazz standards and original pop and rock songs. With a degree in jazz theory and composition from New York University, she has sung with such jazz legends as Lionel Hampton, Clark Terry, Tito Puente, Al Grey and Gerry Bergonzi. The upcoming concert will celebrate the release of her new CD, “Syretha,” which features Holmes on drums.

Holmes served as Santana’s drummer during the band’s tour with Bob Dylan, and he has also played with jazz greats like Wayne Shorter, the Brecker Brothers and Joe Zawinul. He also played drums on the hit single “Smooth” with Rob Thomas. Holmes made a thunderous appearance with Jim Weider’s Project Percolator at Inn on the Blues in York, Maine, in the spring of 2009.

The show begins at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 1 at the Leddy Center for the Performing Arts, 38 Ladds Lane, Epping, 603-679-2781. Tickets are $18 for the general public, or $13 for students.
