wanna live at Robert Frost’s house?
The Frost Place is looking for a poet to live in Robert Frost’s former home next summer. The chosen poet will inhabit Frost’s house in Franconia for several weeks in July and August, where he or she will work on poetry and participate in a number of conferences and festivals held at the site.

The Frost Place, now a permanent home and museum, was owned by Frost from 1915 to 1920. Every summer since 1977, a poet has been selected to live at the house. The residency comes with an award of $1,000 from Dartmouth College and another award of $1,000 from The Frost Place. Past residents have included Robert Haas, Mary Ruefle, Major Jackson, Denis Johnson and, in 2010, K.A. Hays.

Applicants must have at least one published book of poems. Applications are due by Nov. 30 and should include four sets of the following: five poems from a recent book, a résumé, two references and a letter explaining why the candidate would be a good choice. The program aims to select a poet who is at a personal or artistic crossroads similar to what Frost faced in 1915, before he was well known.

The application and a $25 fee should be sent to The Frost Place, P.O. Box 74, Franconia, NH 03580. For more information, contact 603-823-5510 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

teen Beat Night
A special annual installment of The Press Room’s monthly Beat Night event will focus on the poetry of local teenagers. “Young Writers Beat Night” takes place at the Portsmouth bar on Thursday, Nov. 17 at 7 p.m.

Writers between the ages of 13 and 19 are invited to read their work while a live band led by guitarist Larry Simon provides improvised musical accompaniment. Those interested should contact Simon at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it , or just show up with a poem. Participants can request a certain genre or feel for the music.

Normally open to all ages, Beat Night takes place on the third Thursday of each month. Now in its 12th year, the event combines music and poetry in the tradition of beat icons like Jack Kerouac and David Amram.

call for poems
The Poetry Society of New Hampshire is seeking poems to be published in an anthology tentatively titled “You Must Remember This: Poems about Aging and Memory.” Poems should be themed around aging and the issues that come with it.

While poems about memory loss, Alzheimer’s disease and dementia are welcome, but the publishers are looking for a more expansive view of the aging process and how it affects others. Submissions are limited to three poems per poet, each of which should be unpublished and in English.

All selections and most editing decisions will be made by Sept. 1, 2012. For complete guidelines, send a self-addressed, stamped envelope to the Poetry Society of New Hampshire at 31 Reservoir Road, Farmington, NH 03835 or request them by email at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
