The 1990 murder of Gregg Smart in his Derry home, and the subsequent trial and conviction of his wife Pamela, remains one of the most notorious crime sagas in New Hampshire history. A new book by Gregg Smart’s brother Dean reveals the personal side of a tragedy that shocked the nation.

Dean Smart will read from his book, “Skylights and Screen Doors,” at RiverRun Bookstore in Portsmouth on Thursday, Aug. 18. The memoir traces Gregg Smart’s life, as well as his death at the hands of Pamela Smart’s 15-year-old accomplice, and describes the experience of watching America’s first televised trial.

A graduate of the University of New Hampshire, where he studied under former U.S. poet laureate Charles Simic, Dean Smart is already working on a sequel to “Skylights and Screen Doors” and is finishing a book of poetry. 

The event begins at 7 p.m. on Aug. 18 at RiverRun Bookstore, 20 Congress St., Portsmouth, 603-431-2100.
